Open letter to my dad

Oh dad…
I still need you…

I wish you had accepted that little girl, dad. Because dad, if you had, I would too.
I wish you had held me tight every time I needed it.
I wish you had told me how strong I am, daddy.
I wish you had told me I’m the most beautiful girl in the whole wide world. Because dad, if you had, I wouldn’t still be looking for confirmation in every jerk I meet.

Oh dad…

I wish you’d come to every rehearsal and every school event I ever had, daddy.
I wish you’d defend me every time I was bullied at a family event, daddy.
I wish you’d show me how a true lady should be treated, daddy. Because dad, if you had, I’d know what a Man should look like today.

Oh daddy…

I wish you’d never tried to escape life like you did.
I wish I could erase those images from my head.
I wish I could still say, “my daddy is stronger than yours.”
I wish I could still call you my superhero.

But dad…
I know you’re only human.
And dad…
I know you did the best you could possibly do.
And I am so sorry you didn’t get the love YOU deserved as a child.
Dad, you’ll always be my superhero.
And I will always love you more than words could ever hold.
